Editorial verdict

Houseroom's view of the school.

ethos

Donhead is rooted in Jesuit values—curiosity, excellence and good decision-making—which are embedded across the curriculum and school life. Following the closure of nearby Catholic girls' school The Ursuline, Donhead ensured a place for every girl who wanted one, completing the transition to full co-education within two years. The head reports they have 'only seen advantages' from the change.

teaching

Class sizes are no more than 22 in Reception. Play and learning are treated as complementary from the earliest years. Music, sport, art, computing, French and Spanish are all taught by specialist teachers; pupils learn Spanish to Year 3 before switching to French. Formal 11+ preparation begins after February half-term in Year 5 and continues through to January of Year 6. All Year 5 parents have a one-to-one conversation with the head about senior school choices. Over 25 senior schools attend the annual senior-school event. Popular destinations include Tiffin Grammar School, King's Wimbledon, Wimbledon High and St Paul's.

pastoral

Pastoral care is described as exemplary. A dedicated wellbeing room supports children of all needs, and two therapy dogs assist neurodiverse pupils with speech, language and social skills. Year 6 pupils buddy up with Reception children daily. A student council and a 'worry box' (taken seriously and actioned) give pupils a strong voice. The 16 Jesuit virtues are embedded in school life and examined in pairs every half-term. Parents are described as part of the school family and are welcome at any time.
