Editorial verdict

Houseroom's view of the school.

ethos

Independently minded charitable trust, not part of a large school group. Child-led philosophy with lessons tailored to pupils' interests. Real emphasis on co-curricular even in exam years. Head Mark Turner (14 years in post) drove the co-ed transition carefully: staff training began 18 months before the switch, building and playground alterations were made, pastoral and SEN provision was reviewed, and ex-Bute House head Helen Lowe was engaged as a consultant, visiting every half term.

teaching

Reception learning is tailored to each cohort using 'about me' forms and book-led teaching. Specialist teachers cover music, IT, French, PE and drama from early years. Forest school operates for pupils up to Year 1. From Year 4, pupils move between rooms for some subjects including science; two dedicated science labs for dissection and practical work. Strong emphasis on independent reading with weekly library sessions. Creative learning runs across the curriculum — history projects can be presented as podcasts or stop-motion films. Languages taught from nursery: French, Latin, Italian and Spanish. Coding and website design taught in the computer room. Reviewed Year 8 lesson brought *To Kill

pastoral

Year 8s buddy up with younger pupils. Two school nurses on hand. On Tuesdays the art room becomes a therapy room with beanbags for informal pupil drop-in conversations. Pupil councils cover eco, school and charity areas; children choose two charities each year to fundraise for. Parents have staff email addresses directly; parent-organised events include disco and film nights.
