Editorial verdict

Houseroom's view of the school.

ethos

The school is Catholic in foundation; its motto is Virtue Adepta (Acquired by Virtue). Head Richard Berlie promotes kindness, compassion, caring and courage as core values. Around a third of pupils are Catholic but all faiths are welcome. The school is described as outward-looking and unstuffy.

teaching

Classes are small with short 20-minute lessons; core subjects are double or triple periods, giving six or seven classes per day. From Year 5 boys use Surface Pros for class and homework, with emphasis on digital literacy and creative use of technology. French is taught throughout; Latin is added from Year 6. All boys sit the 11+ regardless of senior-school destination, with preparation intensifying from Year 5. Boys are streamed in core subjects from Year 7; Maths sets begin in Year 4. A new Academic in Residence runs debating, critical thinking and one-to-one interview practice sessions. Last year pupils received the highest number of competitive offers in the school's history, including 18

pastoral

Daily reflection time, morning prayers and weekly assemblies underpin pastoral care rooted in Catholic values. A deputy head pastoral and a chaplain both play key pastoral roles; a qualified wellbeing counsellor attends for a full day each week. Parents are closely involved through e-safety workshops, exam-stress sessions and careers week, where they run workshops and speak to pupils. Community links include visits to local hospices and donations to food banks. Pupils can apply to be head for the day.
