Editorial verdict

Houseroom's view of the school.

ethos

Four core values underpin learning: Caring (for yourself and others), Open (expressing yourself confidently and creatively), Responsible (following the rules) and Elastic (bending but not breaking). Mindfulness is woven into the school day via 'the Pause' at the start and end of each lesson. The school describes its aim as balancing academics, creativity and nurture.

teaching

No streaming; small class sizes ensure individual attention. From Year 2, flexible needs-based groups are used. Specialist teachers cover maths, drama, music, art, cooking and sport. Sanskrit is taught from nursery, with an annual handwriting and speech competition; some pupils have gone on to study it at Oxbridge. The school is pen-and-paper focused but has a well-equipped ICT suite used from Reception upwards. An 11+ club and interview practice support those seeking independent senior places. Senior school destinations include Wimbledon High, St Paul's Girls and Latymer Upper, as well as seamless progression to St James Senior Girls' (on site) and St James Senior Boys' (Ashford).

pastoral

Pastoral care is central: mindfulness pauses bookend every lesson, there is a meditation room for staff, and Spotty the wellbeing dog is on site for pupils and staff. The school librarian is also a mental-health first-aider and manages a 'Friendship Wobble' post box. Year 6 pupils buddy up with Reception children. Parents are invited to Friday assembly, weekly Sanskrit lessons, art classes and a staff-and-parents' choir.
