Editorial verdict

Houseroom's view of the school.

ethos

Head Kate Jefferson joined in 2021. She emphasises 20 school values, pupil curiosity and love of learning, and considers pupil happiness, security and belonging as the most important outcomes. She is a teaching head, taking geography lessons herself.

teaching

Chapter House provides light-filled communal and breakout spaces used for collaborative learning. Two science labs serve Year 4 upwards. Languages are a strength: French from Year 3, Greek in Year 5, Latin from Year 6. The English department runs live poetry events with visiting poets and lessons in the large library. Support structures include a nurture group, drop-in clinics for English and maths, Year 8 study buddies, and stretch groups for the academically gifted. Approximately 90% of leavers gain a place at Westminster School; the remaining ~10% typically go to Eton. Frequent collaborations between WUS and Westminster School ease the transition.

pastoral

Pastoral care is described as a whole-staff effort, supported by a full-time counsellor. A dedicated counsellor room with playing cards and Lego offers quiet space for pupils. Wellbeing weeks include lunchtime yoga and treat breaktimes. The active parents' association organises social events and fundraisers; many parents are international. Community outreach includes Year 2 pupils from a local primary visiting monthly and Year 5s reading to and supporting Year 3s with maths weekly.
