Editorial verdict

Houseroom's view of the school.

ethos

Unashamedly girls-first ethos (evolving to co-ed from 2026). The merits award system promotes traditional values and accountability; the ultimate Sixth Form accolade is the Lily badge for consistently excellent behaviour. Chapel takes place three times a week and includes the whole community regardless of beliefs. Each leaver has her name engraved on a pew. Phones are actively discouraged. The head girl team has championed replacing year-group hierarchy with mutual respect.

teaching

The focus is on value-added achievement. Class sizes are small with a staff-to-pupil ratio of 1:4. Setting in English and maths from the outset; subject clinics available for extra support; thrice-yearly assessments. A-level choices include sociology, computer science, photography, psychology, economics, politics, alongside traditional subjects, the Leith's cookery course, and the EPQ. A-level taster sessions are held for all fourth formers in the new sixth-form centre. Art standards are impressive; the school has partnerships with Parsons Paris and the University of Falmouth, including a designer in residence each year. The STEM building was opened by Professor Robert Winston in 2016. Leave

pastoral

Heathfield was the first school to adopt the Flourishing at School pastoral system from Australia, which promotes mental and physical well-being proactively. Each girl is individually mentored by a teacher, assigned a form tutor (with increasing one-to-one frequency as they progress), and has access to an on-site counsellor and nutritionist. Every new girl has a 'shadow' in the year above with similar interests; older-girl peer mentors are known as 'crushes'. Fortnightly 'Flourishing' classes encourage self-awareness and positivity. Outdoor well-being activities include 'Summer Sweat' morning gym classes and walk-and-talk sessions. Four vertical houses host inter-house competitions.
