The school is a vibrant, busy and happy community where senior leaders and governors share a strong vision based upon the core values of character, community and respect. They consistently place the child at the centre of their planning and there is a demonstrable sense of shared purpose among staff and pupils. Senior leaders and those with defined leadership roles, some of whom are new in post, make decisions to the benefit of pupils.

Editorial verdict

Houseroom's view of the school.

ethos

Robert Garvey became headmaster in September 2024 following eight years at Merchant Taylors' School (head of upper school and senior deputy head). Originally trained as a lawyer (UK and French law degrees) before training to teach at Haberdashers' Boys', where he became head of house. Encourages a seven-year rather than seven-hour view of each boy's journey. In his first term he shadowed a pupil from each year group for a day. His study door is always open to pupils and parents.

teaching

School is divided into lower school (Years 7–8), middle school (Years 9–11) and sixth form (ages 16–18). Lower school pupils have a class tutor across both years but are taught by specialist subject teachers. At GCSE, all pupils study English, maths, three sciences, a modern foreign language and a humanities subject, then choose two additional subjects; top-set maths pupils also tackle further maths. Two languages are studied from the outset. Philosophy is taught in Years 7–10 and at A-level. Careers programme from Year 7 covers financial thinking, decision-making and entrepreneurship. Boys from Year 9 upwards have their own devices; VR is being introduced to language lessons. Almost all pup

pastoral

Diverse, cosmopolitan community drawing from a widening catchment area. Age-appropriate pastoral workshops from Year 7 on masculinity and gender stereotypes via the Beyond Equality Initiative. Growing links with Queen's College and Francis Holland girls' schools from Year 7. Sixth formers have a liberal arts programme of lectures, volunteering and weekly PSHE afternoons covering university life, finance and career talks. House system ('Tribs') fosters cross-year integration. Older boys trained as peer mentors and anti-bullying ambassadors. Gold Notes awarded for upholding school values. The school is small enough for every boy to be known personally.
