Module 02
Find the right school for your child, not just the famous ones.
The matcher reads 40+ child-specific signals and scores every school in our database for genuine fit. The 9-pillar Houseroom Index gives you an externally-justified ranking alongside the personal one. Both publish their reasoning.

The matcher
Forty-plus signals, four families.
Each signal pulls weight on a different decision. Bunch them together and you have a shape of the child the standard rankings can't see.
Academic
Confidence by subject, recent results, current school type, target entry point, scholarship interest, learning style.
Practical
Postcode, commute appetite, transport mode, budget band, single-sex / co-ed preference, religion, Saturday-school tolerance.
Personality & fit
Social style, resilience, leadership appetite, test anxiety, competitiveness, interests, languages, SEN needs.
Family context
Siblings at existing schools, parent priorities, biggest worries, relocation timing for international families.
The Index
A transparent 9-pillar ranking, weights public.
The Houseroom Index 2026 publishes its full weighting so you can audit, debate or recompute it yourself. No editorial favourites; no black box.
The Index produces a 100-point composite, three sub-indices (Best for Academics · Whole Child · Future Ready) and a confidence band on every ranking. Where a school is thin on data, the confidence tells you — we don't quietly down-weight or up-weight to flatten the table.
| Pillar | Weight |
|---|---|
| Academic outcomes | 22% |
| University destinations | 17% |
| Future-ready provision | 12% |
| Pastoral care | 12% |
| Pupil flourishing | 8% |
| Value-add | 5% |
| Access (bursaries / scholarships) | 10% |
| Parent voice | 9% |
| External inspection | 5% |

Transparency isn't a marketing word here. It's a daily product decision — every score is auditable, every match shows its reasoning.
- Every match shows its top three reasons (e.g. 'fits commute · strong academic match · scholarship-friendly').
- Reach / target / safer is computed from your child's profile and the school's published admissions selectivity, not a hand-curated list.
- Schools with thin data are flagged with low confidence rather than quietly down-ranked.
- When you change a child profile field, the matches and reasoning update so you can stress-test assumptions.
- No paid placement: a school cannot pay to appear in your matches, and cannot remove itself from low matches.
Built around it
The tools that make the shortlist real.
The matcher is the start. These tools sharpen a shortlist into a decision.
Houseroom Index
A transparent 9-pillar ranking that runs alongside personal matching. When you're choosing between two strong matches, the Index gives you an externally-justified second opinion.
Compare
Side-by-side across academic, pastoral, fees, facilities, parent voice and inspection. No limit on schools picked; saved comparisons are sharable.
Similar schools
Find genuine alternatives to any school. Ranks by ethos, taglines and staff narrative — so the next-best option is actually next-best.
Schools near you
Interactive map by postcode, filterable by entry age, gender and distance radius. Useful for sense-checking the matcher's commute assumptions.
FAQ
Parents most often ask.
How is the matcher different from a general search for 'best schools near me'?
The matcher reads 40+ child-specific signals — confidence by subject, postcode and commute appetite, budget, entry point, interests, learning style, social style — and ranks 286 schools for that child specifically. It groups results into reach / target / safer and shows the reasoning behind each match. General search ranks pages by relevance signals; we rank schools against your child.
How is the matcher unbiased if schools want to be in it?
Schools cannot pay to appear, change the ranking, or remove themselves from low matches. The match score is computed from your child's profile against the school data we hold — fees, entry-point format, distance, academic profile, published leavers' destinations and parent voice. The reasoning is shown on every match so you can audit it.
What's the difference between the matcher and the Houseroom Index?
The matcher is personal: 'which schools fit my child?'. The Index is external: 'how does this school sit across nine pillars?'. Most parents use the matcher to build a shortlist, then sense-check the strong matches against the Index.
What if my child's profile doesn't fit the typical shape?
That's exactly when the matcher earns its keep. SEN, gifted-but-anxious, late-developer, international-mover — the signal set covers personality, learning style, resilience and parent priorities, not just exam confidence. The advisor tier exists for cases where the matcher alone isn't enough.
How accurate is the Houseroom Index?
Every pillar draws from a sourced, dated data point. Schools with thin data get a low confidence band so the score is read with the right weight. The methodology page publishes the full calculation; you can recompute it yourself.
How often do matches update?
On any change to your child profile, saved schools, postcode or budget. Underlying school data is reviewed weekly, so the matches reflect the most recent information in our database.
Can I share my shortlist with my partner or an advisor?
Yes — every shortlist generates a share link. Useful for second opinions, family discussions and (if you choose) sharing with an advisor before a paid session.
Is the matcher free?
Yes. Forever. Personalised matching across 286 schools is free for every parent.
